Becky’s in the Back Seat, pt. 2: Day the First, pt.2: Dangerous Women and Viz Media
The hour went by fast and soon it was time to shuffle off to the next panel.
So, I made my way to wait in line for the next two panels that happen to be in the same room: Most Dangerous Women at Comic Con and the Viz Media panel.
The Most Dangerous Women at Comic Con panel was actually quite interesting. It was largely a moderated conversation talking about the latest in geeky news as well as a discussion of what makes an ideal female character. It was really a great panel to attend. They covered topics such as lack of female villains, portrayals of women in pop culture and Thor being female. It was refreshing and nice to see a more female perspective at Comic Con.
Thankfully my next panel was in the same room as the Most Dangerous Women at Comic Con. That panel was the Viz Media panel.
Like every year, there was a lot of news. This year, there was a lot of new news that was told at Comic Con.
At the beginning of the panel, they gave away two volumes of mange, one each for each person: Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan and Kimi ni Todoke. It’s always nice to receive free manga, especially since I do love to read it so. The book shelves in my living room all have manga on it.
They talked all about the con exclusives they had with them. The con exclusives Viz had was “Bravest Warriors: the Search for Catbug” and “Hello Kitty: Hello 40”.
They quickly delved in to the new manga they have coming up. On November 20 they will be releasing the last volume of Neon Genesis Evangelion (volume 14). They’re releasing the horror manga Gyo 2-in-1 omnibus on December 2.They’re finally releasing the manga edition of All You Need is Kill (which was made in to the movie “The Edge of Tomorrow”) on November 4. They’re also releasing the classic manga Yu-Gi-Oh! (the original series, not the many spin-offs) as a 3-in-1 omnibus on February 3, 2015. They’re also releasing the early arcs of the much-loved series, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. They’re releasing part 1 on February 3, 2015 and part 2 November 3, 2015.
They went on to talk about their digital manga. They talked a lot about what you can buy… like One Punch Man and My Love Story. They also are releasing certain old-school titles from other companies as well as some titles not released before in the US. They also release a lot of their mature titles via the Viz Manga app. This app is the same app where you can download Weekly Shonen Jump.
After talking about both digital and print manga, they went on to discuss their anime. This is a part that I generally enjoy because you never know what sort of neat things you’ll hear about. At Fanime, they introduced that they were going to be releasing the whole of Sailor Moon. This year they talked about the ambassador of anime for the world being shown on Disney XD, Doraemon.
They also talked about what they are currently showing online, mostly through Neon Alley. As I believe I stated before in my Fanime post, Neon Alley is no longer an online TV station showing things on a schedule. It is now on Hulu and is watch on demand. However, they are releasing Sailor Moon on a schedule. They release 2 new old episodes (from the older seasons) every Monday. They are keeping all episodes up to be watched. On Saturdays at 3 AM they are showing brand new episodes of Sailor Moon Crystal at the same time as it airs in Japan. It will stay up on the Hulu website after its initial airing.
