A Ghostly Romance
She glides down the staircase. Her feet gently touching each stair as she continues her arduous journey. Her hand gently caresses the banister. She looks out, searching for him.
Where is he?
Her feet finally hit the floor. She stands there, looking, waiting.
“Well, hello there.”, a voice whispers in her ear.
She jerks her head to see his.
Her eyes are rimmed with tears. She carelessly throw her arms around his neck.
“Oh, Jack!”, she exclaims, “I was wondering where you had gone off to.”
Jack slowly drapes his arms around her waist. He pulls her closer to him.
“Susan, I’ve been waiting.”, he says.
His lips gently meet hers. They feel ethereal against her’s.
“Where…”, Susan starts to ask.
Jack puts a finger on her lips to stop her inquiry.
“That’s not important. I’m here now.”, he tells her.
She closes her eyes and lowers her head. She nods.
“I…”, she starts, “I’m glad you’re here.”
She exhales.
“I thought…”, she continues.
“You thought that I was dead?”, Jack asks.
She nods.
“Yeah. I haven’t heard from you in a couple of months.”, she explains, “It’s been a month since I’ve heard from you. I…”
She begins to sob.
“I thought the worst.”, she sobs.
Jack bring her close to him. He puts a hand on the back of her head, trying to comfort him.
“There’s a reason for that…”, he starts.
He gently kisses her cheek. He feels the rise and fall of Susan’s chest against him.
“A very good reason.”, he continues.
Jack’s body starts to wisp away.
“I’ve always been dead. I was a ghost when you met me.”, he explains, whispering in her ear.
Susan pushes away from him. She sees his body dissipate.
“Wh-when…”, she asks, “Why?”
“From the moment I saw you, I wanted to be with you.”, he tells her, “No matter how hard I tried to be able to stay with you…”
He lowers his head.
“No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t find a way to be with you.”, he finishes.
As Jack finishes, he disappears entirely.
Susan crumples to the floor. She sobs loudly, violently. Her body is bereft of any strength. She lies on the floor, crying.
